Introduction

Group IT Intranet Portal site is designed to allow information to be quickly disseminated to employees in the IT departments, to make common internal work processes more efficient and to provide a sense of community within an organization. However, the current defects included the messy site architecture and the lack of clear user-centric stories are the major roadblock for their initiative.

The project deliverables are mainly focus on redesign of sitemap and homepage.

Research Drive

Focus Group Workshop is aimed to figure out users' preference and expectation in an interactive way.

The first section is to provide insights from the modern intranet design approach to the users. I held a group discussion with talking about the user stories, current defects, expectations and contents optimisation. We share our idea in card sorting and came up the simplified and user-centric approach for the sitemap redesign.

In the Design Workshop at next stage, users are required to design their own landing page wireframe.

Based on the result from the first section, I summarised the use case scenarios and prepared paper cards with illustrating related features for their needs. Each users made their own design and finally we discussed the design pattern that fit for their needs.

The homepage layout is divided into three major part with clear user stories: news & sharing, useful links groups and query & services.

User-centric titles are also used to bring up the engagement with users.

Based on the results, I created the wireframe in digital version to visualise the idea for further usability testing.

Before moving to the visual design process, I kept iterating the wireframe after the usability testings. The major topic is to simplify the content and structure, in order to emphasis the key features.

For examples, the page length is reduced by revising the contents and front-end coding, to make sure users can view all contents without any scrolling.

The top navigation is also replaced by a collapsed menu, to make the look & feel less busy on text, and align the experience on tablet and mobile version.
